Audience Feedback

We have also done a presentation for audience feedback but due to computer issues, we can not edit the clips and put them together to put on here for a blog, hopefully we can still be credited for this as are teacher knows about the problem and has saw our presentation, as it was to our classmates in media.

Warner Bros/Time Warner Company

Warner Bros. Pictures is one of the biggest distribution companies in the world as they are famous for the distribution process of all eight of the Harry Potter films. 

They first distributed this by a teaser poster which they released on New Years Day in 2001, this was then followed by a teaser trailer which was released 2 months later by satellite. The film was then later on released in the UK on 11th may 2012.

This gave them a lot of recognition from potential customers, which meant that they saw a gap in the market to release video games and toys, which would bring high profit and a range of customers, whilst building up their fan base and reputation.

Planning of our thriller piece

Our discussing of the thriller, this is me talking through our initial plans for the thriller piece, plans have changed slightly since then.

Textual Analysis

Hunger Games

Camera - At the start of this film, it pans over the hills and it is low key with one light source the sun, with may connote sadness and loneliness and pain, as this is the second hunger games and this is how she feels after she has gone through the first one, as maybe it has took a tole on her and now her life is sad and dark after killing all those people in the first hunger games.

There is master shot of the her knelt down, next to the river, looking out into the distance, this may be a place she goes now to think things over and mourn lost ones, if you hadn't of seen the first hunger games, you would be asking why she is carrying a bow and arrow, this would make the audience think and be like 'what does she do' 'is she a killer' and then a man approaches and she jumps, this also shows that she may of got trauma from the last hunger games as, this is typical of thriller as it keeps the audience guessing, asking why she is jumpy, if they had not watched the first one.

There is a two shot of her and a male actor who approaches and this could be a partner of hers or just close friends, as he new where she would be and, he is not a enemy of her as she lowers her bow as soon as she realises it's him.

Low shot of a rabbit dead, which they will probably be taking to the homes to eat as this shows that even though she is jumpy and looks helpless, she can survive by herself as she has killed the rabbit, which is typical of a thriller as it shows that the protagonist is strong and can look after themselves even in the worst of situations. 

There is a close up of her pulling her bow back, aiming for a turkey, which shows that they have to search and kill for food, which supports my earlier idea of her being strong and being able to look after herself, when she shoots the arrow though she believes that she hits a man instead but its all in her head, which shows the tole of the hunger games and how even when you are out of it, you still have traumatic memories of it. This is very much like our thriller as he has flashbacks and nightmares of past jobs and he doesn't want to go back and when he gets a call from the agency it all comes flooding back the pain, the anger and the memories. 

Mise-en-scene -The scene starts off panning over the dark woods, which looks foggy and dull, showing in the horizon, the sun peering over the mountains. This shows that its very mysterious place to live as on one side its nice, bright and sunny, and on the other its dark dull and forbidden looking.

It then goes onto show a woman knelt down looking into the river, with a bow and arrow strapped to her back, she looks weak, scared and teary eyed, and jumps at the slightest things, this shows that she hasn't had a good past or, something has happened to make her by aware of her surroundings. This represents a thriller as it makes the audience want to know whats happened to her and why she acts like she does, and why she is sat where she is.

Soon after a man appears, and the proxemits of how they are stood is far away, like they can't trust each other as they don't know each other too well or that they have some hidden secret which makes them uncomfortable around each other. As she has a dead animal in her hands it shows that she forages for her own food, and kills so she can eat, this shows that its a thriller as it's a cliff- hanger, right at the beginning, leaving the audience wondering why she has to.

She then goes on to aim at some turkeys to kill them, for her food, but unfortunately for her, she ends up shooting the man, which leaves her shook up, as it is in a woods it creates more for an atmosphere and makes it more dark and frightening to the audience. As they are both wearing dark clothing with boots, it also creates the effect of them trying to blend in with the woods as the aren't meant to be seen.

Inception

Camera - Inception there is a low shot of a man laid in the sea asleep you gather from this shot that he may be lost, or homeless or drunk, but seen as this is a thriller it is most likely to be that he is lost and the marks on his skin may show that he may have been in an incident and that is why he is washed up on shore.

He is waking up and by his facial expressions as he is looking around it shows that he doesn't really know where is, or why he is laid in the sea, at this point he may not, even remember his name, they have also shown this, with a low shot of him laid in the sea.

There is a point of view shot of what looks like an officer of some sort as the weapon he is carrying isn't any kind of hand gun people just carry around for protection. The man comes up and pokes the protagonist with his gun he inspects the man and then lifts up the protagonists jacket and there is a gun hidden in his trousers, which may say that he is/was on a mission of some sort and has now got washed up on the shore.

Now the guard or officer has realised that this person laid on the floor isn't just anyone, he calls up to another man on a cliff, it goes from a high angle shot of the man, too a long shot of the cliff and the building, the building looks very expensive and upper class, this may be the place that the protagonist may be trying to break in to, this is why he has a gun and is washed up on the shore and also as the guard/officer shouted for help, they may be scared, which means they may have something to hide, which is very typical of a thriller.

Then it shows an establishing shot of the a room and what it looks like to be the antagonist, sitting in his chair, with guards around him, which may say reinfer that they have something to hide, the proxemits of how close one of them is to the man sat down may say he needs protection and knows people are after him or something he has.

There is then an over the shoulder shot of the man and they have kept his face concealed from full face view or any precise facial features, so you cant pick out who he is just yet, which is very typical of a thriller to keep things building up and have people asking 'why, who, what, when etc?' In the opening minutes.

There is a shot of just the mans hands and it is showing him holding his spoon like he has only just learnt how to eat, which is very peculiar as, the man sat down asks him if he is going to kill him, which shows that this person isn't stupid and should very well know how to hold a spoon right, which may say that he has forgot how to, he may have some kind of amnesia, as he was washed up on the shore and looks banged up.

Editing - At the start when he is waking up they have a shot of a boy playing in the sand, it blurs out of focus, this effect shows that he is waking up and his very effective and is used on a lot of thrillers, he is looking around, like he doesn't know where he is which supports my first point if that this man may be lost and washed up a shore.

When the bodyguards come in to scene one is told to show the antagonist what they found on the man, they put down a gun and a spinning top, they show this with a close up of his hand, they blur out the gun and put the spinning top in focus, with isn't usual as usually they would put the gun in focus as a gun is a dangerous weapon for a man to carry but it puts this in focus, which may say that this is more important than a gun, the protagonist may be part of a group, who carry this as there symbol and people know them by this spinning top, this shot is very typical for a thriller as it is only one shot and will have the audience, guessing why they want you to focus on the spinning top and not the gun, something i hope to achieve in our thriller intro.

Mise-en-Scene-The mise-en-scene at the start shows the waves crashing violently against the rocks, this represents a thriller as its mysterious and you're left wanting to know straight away, why the scene has started off in the sea. It also makes the audience feel a sense of exhilaration at the beginning as they already know that something bad has or is going to happen.

It then goes on to seeing Leonardo DiCaprio laying face down in the sand, looking confused and puzzled, it also shows in looking dirty and unwashed, this represents him to be a man who has had a bad past or is in some trouble with some dangerous people. As he is face down in the sand it makes me think that he hasn't had a very good life and he has always been on the bottom of the hierarchy.

Afterwards a man approaches DiCaprio with a gun poking him in has back, this shows the man to be masculine and wants to show authority, as he isn't afraid to point a gun at somebody who is just laying in the sand, its like he is trying to mark his territory. This represents a thriller as its implying that it is a rough place to live and its also very dangerous if you're not meant to be their.

Later on in the scene it shows a man sat in a chair, in a big room, which suggests that he is a big well respected person who can afford luxury things and men who can protect him. It also shows that he has the ability to empower people into what he wants them to do. As soon after it pans onto a gun on the table, which shows that he doesn't fight with fists and second chances, he gets things dealt with straight away, even if it isn't the right way.

At the end of the scene i am analyzing it shows Leonardo DiCaprio getting dragged in, by two big built men, then infers that he is weak and powerless and the two men are the overpowering one's, being ordered to do things, by the top man. It shows him looking unimportant compared to the rest of the men.
